German electronic project Dominatrix delivers a harder take on “Photographic” with Martin Bodewell. The Orange Sector frontman adds a powerful EBM edge. Originally, Depeche Mode released “Photographic” in 1981. The song first appeared on the influential Some Bizzare Album compilation. Consequently, it became an early landmark in the development of synthpop and electronic music. Dominatrix later rebuilt the track for the 2021 tribute compilation Breathing In Fumes (An Infactious Tribute to Depeche Mode). The release arrived on October 1, 2021, through Infacted Recordings. Therefore, this version connects early Depeche Mode with the darker EBM scene.
Dominatrix created the musical foundation for all 12 tracks on Breathing In Fumes. Then, label head Torben Schmidt helped select established vocalists from electronic music. Martin Bodewell became the ideal voice for “Photographic.” He leads Orange Sector, the influential German EBM act formed in 1992. Orange Sector draws heavily from pioneers such as DAF and Nitzer Ebb. As a result, Bodewell brings a tougher and more aggressive character to the song. His punchy delivery transforms the original synthpop framework into a more industrial EBM performance. Meanwhile, Dominatrix keeps the song’s electronic identity intact. The result bridges two important generations of German electronic music.
Breathing In Fumes also fits naturally within the history of Depeche Mode tributes. The album title references Depeche Mode’s 1986 “Breathing in Fumes.” That track reworked “Stripped” with a stripped-down industrial approach. Similarly, this compilation pushes familiar songs toward darker electronic territory. For Dominatrix, the project stands apart from a traditional album release. Instead, it presents a carefully rebuilt selection of classic Depeche Mode material. “Photographic” therefore highlights the project’s central idea. It takes an early synthpop classic and gives it renewed EBM power. Moreover, Bodewell’s performance adds a distinctly German industrial character to the 2021 interpretation.
