“Cherub” captures the strange, psychedelic power of Butthole Surfers at their most experimental. The band released the track in 1984 on Psychic… Powerless… Another Man’s Sac. Touch and Go Records issued the debut album in December 1984. Furthermore, “Cherub” stretches beyond six minutes with eerie rhythms, distorted vocals, and noisy guitar textures. Gibby Haynes pushes his vocals through warped effects, while the band builds a hypnotic wall of sound. As a result, the track became an early example of the group’s fearless approach to underground rock.
Butthole Surfers formed in San Antonio, Texas, in 1981. Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary helped shape the band’s chaotic sound from the beginning. Meanwhile, King Coffey and Teresa Nervosa created a massive rhythmic attack with two drum kits. They often played standing up and struck matching patterns together. Consequently, songs such as “Cherub” gained a tribal and hypnotic pulse. The band also recorded its debut album for less than $4,000. In 2024, Matador Records remastered the early catalog, giving this landmark recording renewed attention.
