Today’s video of the day is Livin’ Joy – "Dreamer" released in 1994.
Livin’ Joy’s “Dreamer” burst onto the dance scene in 1994, powered by Janice Robinson’s soaring vocals and the Visnadi brothers’ vibrant house production. This track became a defining anthem of ’90s Eurodance. The video for “Dreamer” captures the song’s message of hope and resilience through vivid club scenes and Robinson’s commanding presence. Initially released in 1994, “Dreamer” gained slow traction. After a re-release in 1995 by MCA Records, it shot to number one on the UK Singles Chart. It also reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Dance chart, solidifying its global success.
Robinson, raised in New Jersey, brought gospel roots to her performance. Inspired by Robin S.’s "Show Me Love," she wrote the lyrics while riding a train in Milan. After a quick studio session in Italy, she returned to New York. A year later, MCA Records picked up the song. It soon became a club hit and pop crossover. “Dreamer” appears on Livin’ Joy’s only album, Don’t Stop Movin’, released in 1996. However, this version was re-recorded by new vocalist Tameko Star after Robinson left the group. The original Robinson version was included as a hidden track on the album. Star’s version gave the track a slightly different tone, but Robinson’s original remains iconic.
Two official videos were made—one in 1994 and a more polished version in 1995 after the re-release. The 1995 version features Robinson in a Vivienne Westwood corset, performing with confidence on Top of the Pops, marking a career high point. Though Livin’ Joy released more hits like “Don’t Stop Movin’” and “Follow the Rules,” none matched the impact of “Dreamer.” The group faded after their only album, while Robinson launched a solo career. She re-released “Dreamer” in 2005, and in 2018, performed it on The X Factor, reminding fans of its lasting power. “Dreamer” remains Livin’ Joy’s signature song. Its optimistic message and unforgettable vocal delivery continue to inspire. Ranked number 15 on MTV Dance’s “100 Biggest 90’s Dance Anthems,” the song and its video still shine decades later.
