Today’s video of the day is Vandal Moon – “Sweet Disaster” released in 2022.
Santa Cruz-based duo Vandal Moon draws inspiration from the darkwave and post-punk acts of the early ’80s. Blake Voss handles vocals, guitars, and synthesizers, while Jeremy Einsiedler controls drum machines and synths. Together, they craft a nostalgic yet modern sound. After the success of Black Kiss in 2020, Vandal Moon returned with Queen of the Night in 2022. The album explores themes of chaos and self-discovery in a collapsing world. Maurizio Baggio, known for working with Soft Moon and Boy Harsher, mixed and mastered the album, giving it a refined edge.
“Sweet Disaster” is the first single from Queen of the Night. The song blends sharp synths with Voss’ haunting vocals, creating a dark yet danceable track. The production channels ’80s influences, mixing the grand snares of Sisters of Mercy with the melodic appeal of Anything Box and Cetu Javu. The video for “Sweet Disaster” enhances its eerie energy. It features powerful women in commanding roles, casting spells and dominating men. Meanwhile, Voss and Einsiedler cruise neon-lit streets as the chorus explodes with intensity. The visuals complement the song’s themes of control, power, and uncertainty.
Like their past work, Queen of the Night expands Vandal Moon’s signature style. While Black Kiss leaned into a raw, gothic atmosphere, this album refines their synth-driven approach. The songs feel cinematic, capturing the tension of youth in an uncertain future. With its infectious melody and dark allure, “Sweet Disaster” is a standout. It bridges the gap between nostalgia and modern darkwave, securing its place on dance floors worldwide.
