Today’s video of the day is the Icon of Coil – "Shelter" released in 2004.
Icon of Coil brought melodic futurepop and driving EBM together with “Shelter.” The Norwegian project released the song in 2004. Andy LaPlegua and Sebastian Komor wrote and composed the track. It appeared on Machines Are Us, their acclaimed second studio album. This live video captures the song at the Out Of Line Electro Festival. However, Icon of Coil began several years earlier. LaPlegua first created the project in 1997 as a graphic design concept. Soon after, he developed its musical identity with Komor.
Meanwhile, “Shelter” became one of Icon of Coil’s defining tracks. The song combines futurepop melodies with a harder club pulse. In addition, its production hints at LaPlegua’s later work with Combichrist. Icon of Coil, however, maintained a more melodic electronic style. Machines Are Us followed their debut album Serenity Is the Devil. Therefore, it showed how the duo expanded their sound while retaining their electronic roots. The album also strengthened their place within the futurepop and EBM scenes. Their live performances added another dimension to the song’s powerful dancefloor energy.
Furthermore, “Shelter” continued to grow beyond its original album release. A dedicated Shelter EP arrived in November 2005. It featured remixes from Combichrist, Analogue Brain, and Soman. The track also gained attention across the German Alternative Charts. As a result, it became a key club track within the futurepop scene. The physical Machines Are Us release also credits “Richard The Drum Guy” for additional acoustic drums. Those organic hits add extra force to the electronic production. The Out Of Line Electro Festival performance highlights that energy in a live setting. Today, “Shelter” remains a standout example of Icon of Coil’s melodic club sound.
