Today’s video of the day is David Bowie – “Drive-In Saturday” released in 1973.

David Bowie released Drive-In Saturday in 1973 as part of Aladdin Sane. The song blends futuristic themes with 1950s doo-wop influences. It imagines a world where people have forgotten how to make love and rely on old films to relearn it. Bowie once said the story takes place in 2033. Bowie wrote the song while traveling by train during his 1972 U.S. tour. He saw strange lights in the desert between Seattle and Phoenix, which inspired the song’s eerie atmosphere. Lyrically, he referenced Mick Jagger, model Twiggy, and Carl Jung. The line about Jung hints at the psychological depth that later shaped his career.

He first performed the song live in late 1972 before recording it in December. He offered it to Mott the Hoople, but they declined. This rejection frustrated Bowie, leading him to shave off his eyebrows during the Ziggy Stardust tour. Released as a single, Drive-In Saturday became a UK Top 3 hit. It followed The Jean Genie, another single from Aladdin Sane. The B-side featured Round and Round, a Chuck Berry cover. Despite its success, the song did not appear on a greatest hits album until nearly 20 years later.

Many consider Drive-In Saturday one of Bowie’s finest glam-era singles. It showcases his ability to mix nostalgia with futuristic themes. Critics rank it among his best songs. It stands out on Aladdin Sane, an album known for its wild, fragmented energy. Unlike the raw rock sound of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, this album embraced a more chaotic and experimental style. Bowie continued evolving after Aladdin Sane. He shifted toward soul and funk with Young Americans and later embraced electronic music with Low. His ability to reinvent himself kept his music fresh and influential. Drive-In Saturday remains a key example of his unique storytelling and musical vision.
