Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs. The album marked a major turning point for Ministry. Al Jourgensen and his collaborators pushed far beyond the synth-pop and industrial sounds of their earlier records. Instead, they created a heavier mix of metal guitars, electronic noise, samples, and pounding rhythms. Consequently, Psalm 69 helped establish Ministry as a major force in industrial metal. “Just One Fix” captures that transformation with its relentless guitar riff and dark subject matter. Moreover, the song explores drug addiction through a tense and confrontational industrial sound.
The accompanying music video adds another layer to the song’s cultural impact. Coil member Peter Christopherson directed the video, bringing a stark and experimental visual style to Ministry’s aggressive sound. Most notably, it features legendary counterculture writer William S. Burroughs. Burroughs strongly influenced Jourgensen, making his appearance especially significant. Furthermore, Burroughs created the cover artwork for the “Just One Fix” single. The song also uses samples from Sid and Nancy and Hellbound: Hellraiser II. In addition, it incorporates Frank Sinatra’s voice from The Man with the Golden Arm. These elements create a disturbing atmosphere that perfectly matches the music.
“Just One Fix” also shows how dramatically Ministry evolved across their catalog. Their early albums, including With Sympathy and Twitch, leaned toward synth-pop, electronic music, and dance rhythms. However, The Land of Rape and Honey and The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste introduced increasingly harsh industrial textures. Then, Psalm 69 pushed that formula into full industrial metal territory. As a result, “Just One Fix” became a landmark recording for the band and the genre. Rolling Stone later ranked it among the greatest heavy metal songs ever recorded. Its influence also reached Brazil’s Sepultura, who covered the track on Kairos in 2011. Decades later, its crushing riff and chaotic energy still sound remarkably powerful.
