Clan of Xymox return to their darkwave roots with “Big Brother,” a haunting track from Limbo. Released in 2021, the song explores surveillance, technology, and modern social control. Moreover, its Orwellian title points directly toward 1984. However, Ronny Moorings shifts the focus toward smartphones, algorithms, corporations, and digital tracking. “They know what you’ve bought / They know your every thought” captures the song’s central fear. Formed in Nijmegen, Netherlands, in 1981, Clan of Xymox became a key force in European darkwave. Their early releases, including Clan of Xymox and Medusa, helped define their atmospheric sound. Later, albums such as Twist of Shadows, Creatures, and Notes from the Underground expanded their electronic and gothic palette. Meanwhile, Moorings remained the band’s central creative force. By 2021, he was the only original founding member still in the lineup. He wrote and recorded “Big Brother” during the COVID-19 lockdowns from his home studio in Leipzig. Consequently, the song reflects the isolation, restrictions, and growing digital surveillance of that period.
“Big Brother” became a lead single for Limbo, which followed on July 23, 2021. First, the standalone Big Brother EP arrived on June 25. It included the original version and several remixes. Notably, John Fryer contributed an industrial-leaning remix. Fryer also engineered Clan of Xymox’s early albums Clan of Xymox and Medusa.
