Today’s video of the day is Blutengel – "I’m Dying Alone" (Other Voices mix) released in 2001.

Blutengel emerged in Berlin in 1998 under the direction of Chris Pohl. The group soon became a major name in the German darkwave and electro scene. Their sound blends electronic beats, dark synths, gothic themes, and dramatic vocals. In 2001, Blutengel released Seelenschmerz, their second studio album. It marked an important step in the band’s development. The album expanded their dark electronic sound while adding stronger melodies and emotional depth. Among its standout tracks, “I’m Dying Alone” captures Blutengel’s darker and more vulnerable side. Chris Pohl wrote, composed, and produced the song. Meanwhile, haunting female vocals add another emotional layer. Together, the voices create a powerful contrast between darkness and fragility.

The “Other Voices” mix gives the song a distinct atmosphere. It places greater emphasis on alternative vocal layers and ambient textures. As a result, the track feels even more isolated and haunting. The driving synth rhythm remains central, yet the arrangement creates more space around the vocals. Furthermore, the lyrics explore heartbreak, loneliness, vulnerability, and despair. These themes became central to Blutengel’s identity during this period. The group combined romantic darkness with electronic club rhythms. Therefore, “I’m Dying Alone” fits naturally beside the other material on Seelenschmerz. At the same time, it helped establish ideas that Blutengel would develop across later albums. Their subsequent releases pushed further into darkwave, futurepop, gothic pop, and electronic music.

The video for “I’m Dying Alone” reflects the song’s melancholic character. Its atmosphere complements Blutengel’s gothic image and emotional electronic sound. Moreover, the “Other Voices” mix highlights the song’s sense of solitude. The track also remains an important piece of the band’s early catalog. Later albums expanded Blutengel’s sound, but the emotional foundation stayed intact. In addition, Seelenschmerz remains a key release in understanding that evolution. The song has since received an official remaster. Out of Line Music included it on the expanded Seelenschmerz (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition). Thus, “I’m Dying Alone” connects Blutengel’s early darkwave style with their broader musical legacy.
