Today’s video of the day is The Bolshoi – “Sunday Morning” released in 1986.
The Bolshoi, an English band from London, captivated audiences in the mid-1980s. Known for their dark yet catchy sound, they achieved fame with songs like “Sunday Morning” and “A Way.” The band’s ability to blend pensive lyrics with social awareness set them apart. Formed in 1984 in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, the original lineup included Trevor Tanner, Jan Kalicki, and Graham Cox. Tanner and Kalicki previously played in the punk band Moskow. Early gigs saw them sharing the stage with The Cult and The Lords of the New Church. Nick Chown replaced Graham Cox after just eight shows, and in 1985, the band added keyboardist Paul Clark.
In 1986, The Bolshoi released their first full-length album, Friends, which included the hit “Sunday Morning.” This album solidified their reputation and showcased their unique style. With proto-goth elements and dark lyrics, the songs resonated with fans of Bauhaus and similar acts. “Sunday Morning” became a standout track, reflecting the band’s knack for storytelling and moody atmospheres. The accompanying video highlighted their theatrical and introspective vibe, making it a fan favorite. The success of Friends allowed the band to expand their reach, touring the U.S., South America, and beyond.
The Bolshoi followed Friends with Lindy’s Party in 1987. This album took a more pop-oriented direction. Critics praised it for its catchy, polished sound. The shift showed the band’s versatility while maintaining their identity. After Lindy’s Party, The Bolshoi recorded a fourth album, Country Life, but issues with their label led to the band’s breakup in 1988. Decades later, Country Life resurfaced, giving fans a glimpse of what could have been. “Sunday Morning” remains a key piece of The Bolshoi’s legacy. It connects the darker tones of Friends with the more accessible sound of Lindy’s Party. The track exemplifies the band’s ability to balance emotion and melody, leaving a lasting impact on listeners.
Today, The Bolshoi’s music continues to inspire, with Trevor Tanner and Paul Clark exploring new projects. Their legacy lives on through timeless tracks like “Sunday Morning.”
