Today’s video of the day is Men Without Hats – “I Like” released in 1997.

Men Without Hats, a new wave synth-pop band, formed in 1980. Brothers Ivan and Stefan Doroschuk led the group. Ivan was the lead vocalist and main songwriter. Stefan played guitar. The band’s lineup changed frequently, but they made a significant impact on the new wave scene. In 1980, they released their debut EP, Folk of the ’80s, independently. Stiff Records reissued it in Britain the next year. By 1982, the band included another Doroschuk brother, Colin, on keyboards, and Allan McCarthy on drums. This lineup recorded their debut album, Rhythm of Youth, in 1982. The album featured their hit single, “The Safety Dance,” which peaked at number three on the American charts in 1983. The song’s catchy three-chord synthesizer riff made it a defining track of the new wave era. Following the success of Rhythm of Youth, Men Without Hats released Folk of the ’80s (Part III). Unfortunately, it only reached number 127 on the American charts. The album didn’t make a significant impact globally.

In 1987, the band released Pop Goes the World, which performed better due to its minor-hit title track. However, it didn’t match the success of their first album. Two years later, they released The Adventures of Women & Men Without Hate in the 21st Century, which failed to chart. Their follow-up album in 1991, Sideways, also didn’t perform well. The music video for “I Like,” a song from Rhythm of Youth, exemplifies the band’s unique style. The song and video capture the essence of the early ’80s new wave movement. “I Like” stands out with its upbeat tempo and catchy melody, showcasing Ivan Doroschuk’s distinctive vocals.

Men Without Hats struggled to replicate the success of “The Safety Dance.” However, their early work remains influential in the synth-pop genre. The video for “I Like” serves as a reminder of their innovative contributions to music in the 1980s.
