Today’s video of the day is Big Audio Dynamite – “Contact” released in 1989.

Big Audio Dynamite emerged as a musical force in the aftermath of Mick Jones’ departure from The Clash. Crafting a fusion of rock, funk, and electronica, the band pushed boundaries with their innovative use of samples and breaks. Following their 1985 debut, ‘This is Big Audio Dynamite’, they garnered attention with subsequent releases like ‘No. 10, Upping St.’ and ‘Tighten Up, Vol. 88’.

In 1989, the group unveiled ‘Megatop Phoenix’, featuring the infectious track ‘Contact’. This album marked a departure from their earlier work, embracing a more eclectic sound with elements of dance and hip-hop. Amidst lineup changes, Big Audio Dynamite continued to evolve, morphing into Big Audio Dynamite II in 1990 before reclaiming their original name in 1995. Despite facing obstacles, such as the shelving of their album ‘Entering A New Ride’, the band persisted, even pioneering early internet releases with a 1997 online distribution. Though disbanded in 1998, their reunion in 2011 reignited interest in their influential legacy.

‘Contact’, with its vibrant energy and genre-blurring style, encapsulates Big Audio Dynamite’s ability to defy conventions and captivate audiences. As a standout track on ‘Megatop Phoenix’, it showcases the band’s willingness to experiment and push boundaries. With its infectious rhythm and catchy hooks, ‘Contact’ remains a timeless testament to Big Audio Dynamite’s enduring creativity and innovation.
