Today’s video of the day is Sister Machine Gun – "Not My God" released in 1992.
Chris Randall built Sister Machine Gun from the heart of the early 1990s industrial scene. Before leading the project, Randall worked as a roadie for acts such as Foetus, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and KMFDM. He also gave KMFDM’s Sascha Konietzko a cassette of his own music. As a result, Konietzko helped Randall connect with Wax Trax! Records. That relationship helped bring “Not My God” to a wider industrial audience in 1992. The song appeared on a standalone EP and also became a key track on Sister Machine Gun’s debut album, Sins of the Flesh. Furthermore, Randall and Konietzko co-produced the track. The EP included the album edit, a demo version, and the popular Killjoy Club Mix. Together, these versions showed the song’s raw electronic power and club potential.
“Not My God” also has an unusual story behind its original recording. Randall later explained that the demo came from a strange barter deal. A guitarist in the band worked at a leather jacket store. Meanwhile, a local studio owner wanted one of the store’s jackets. The band traded the jacket for eight hours of studio time. However, the guitarist later stole another jacket to replace it. That session helped create the early version of “Not My God.” Unlike traditional rock recordings, Sister Machine Gun built its songs in the studio. Randall and his partner improvised instrumental parts first. Then, Randall wrote lyrics while listening to the recordings. As a result, the music focused on programming, texture, and electronic rhythm. Randall also cited The The’s Soul Mining as a major influence, despite frequent comparisons with Nine Inch Nails.
Most importantly, “Not My God” established Sister Machine Gun’s core sound. Heavy beats, harsh synthesizers, industrial guitars, and dark vocals defined the group’s early identity. However, the band continued developing that sound across later releases. Sins of the Flesh laid the foundation for a career that moved between industrial rock, electronic music, and darker alternative styles. Later albums expanded the production and songwriting while retaining Randall’s distinctive approach. Therefore, “Not My God” remains an important starting point in the Sister Machine Gun story. Its pounding rhythm and abrasive atmosphere capture the creative energy of early 1990s industrial music. Today, the track still stands as one of the project’s defining early recordings.
