Today’s video of the day is Bigod 20 – "On The Run" released in 1993.

Bigod 20’s “On the Run” stands as a key track from the German electronic scene of the early 1990s. Released in 1992, it combines pounding Electronic Body Music (EBM) with industrial energy. The song appeared on the band’s debut album, Steel Works!, released through Sire Records. Moreover, the track also arrived as a popular maxi-single and EP. Those releases included the Starry Night Mix and Turbo Techno Mix. As a result, “On the Run” became an important club track during Bigod 20’s breakthrough period.

Bigod 20 formed around Andreas Tomalla, better known as pioneering DJ Talla 2XLC. In fact, Tomalla helped establish the term Electronic Body Music in 1984. Therefore, Bigod 20 carried strong EBM credentials from the beginning. “On the Run” also marked an early appearance by vocalist Thomas Franzmann, later known as Zip Campisi. Interestingly, the band considered Dirk Ivens of The Klinik before choosing Franzmann. Furthermore, the “On the Run” releases featured an unexpected cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” Bigod 20 transformed the pop classic into a hard-edged EBM club track. Consequently, the cover helped introduce their sound to a wider American alternative audience.

However, Steel Works! did not include several earlier Bigod 20 club favorites. Songs such as “Body to Body” remained with ZYX Records because of label rights. Instead, the album focused on new material and established a tougher direction. Later, Bigod 20 continued evolving beyond its early EBM roots. Their subsequent releases explored techno, electronic dance music, and more experimental sounds. Meanwhile, former members Markus Nikolai and Zip Campisi later founded Perlon Records. Today, “On the Run” remains a strong snapshot of Bigod 20’s early industrial club sound. Its driving rhythm, electronic textures, and crossover ambition capture an important moment in EBM history.
