Today’s video of the day is the Sister Machine Gun – "Burn" released in 1995.
“Burn” introduced Sister Machine Gun to a much wider audience in 1995. The track appeared on the band’s second album, Burn. Chris Randall led the project and built its sound around industrial electronics and aggressive rock. Before Sister Machine Gun, Randall played with Chicago industrial act Die Warzau. He later joined the Wax Trax! Records roster after submitting a solo demo. Soon, the label signed him to a multi-album deal. For Burn, Randall also worked with Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo. Meanwhile, former Die Warzau drummer Kevin Temple joined the live lineup.
The “Burn” video followed the album’s release and its growing profile. However, the track gained unexpected attention through the Mortal Kombat soundtrack. TVT Records originally planned to promote “Hole in the Ground” with the film. The band even filmed a video for that song. However, the label switched to “Burn” at the last moment. Randall disliked the decision because “Burn” did not match the soundtrack’s energy. He also felt it lacked strong radio potential. Consequently, TVT canceled the planned “Hole in the Ground” single. Still, the Mortal Kombat soundtrack went platinum. As a result, Sister Machine Gun launched a massive headline tour. The band played 210 shows in only 260 days.
The Burn album also included several hidden surprises. First, listeners could access an unlisted cover of The Doors’ “Strange Days.” They could find it before the first track through the CD’s pre-gap. Another hidden track featured a reprise of “Inside.” It appeared at the end of the final track. Meanwhile, Burn marked an important step between Sister Machine Gun’s early work and later releases. The album expanded Randall’s industrial sound with heavier guitars and stronger electronic hooks. Later albums continued developing that mix of industrial rock, electronics, and dark atmosphere. Therefore, “Burn” remains an important snapshot of Sister Machine Gun’s rise during the 1990s industrial boom.
