Today’s video of the day is the Sleaford Mods – “Tarantula Deadly Cargo” released in 2015.
Nottingham-based duo Sleaford Mods have unveiled the video for “Tarantula Deadly Cargo,” a track from their AA single ‘Tarantula Deadly Cargo / No One’s Bothered.’ This release anticipates their third ‘proper’ album, Key Markets, scheduled for release on July 24, 2015. Formed in 2007, Sleaford Mods consist of vocalist Jason Williamson and musician Andrew Fearn, who joined in 2012. Their music combines minimalist electronic beats with sharp, spoken-word lyrics, offering unfiltered commentary on contemporary life. Over the years, they’ve gained a reputation for their raw sound and candid perspectives.
The video for “Tarantula Deadly Cargo” was directed by Simon Parfrement, known for his work on the band’s “Tied Up in Nottz” video. Shot in a seaside town, the video features cold, hard handrails at the foot of the beach, reflecting the song’s stark themes. This alienating environment mirrors the disorientation often depicted in their music. As described by Williamson, it’s akin to “a 99 flake in a knackered bus shelter.” Key Markets continues Sleaford Mods’ exploration of modern societal issues. The album delves into themes such as character assassination, delusions of grandeur, and the futility of government politics. While some tracks adopt an abstract approach, the music remains grounded in the realities of contemporary existence. This thematic focus aligns with their previous albums, including Austerity Dogs (2013) and Divide and Exit (2014), which also critique societal and political landscapes.
In support of their new material, Sleaford Mods have an extensive lineup of live performances. They’ll kick off with shows in June, starting at The Leadmill in Sheffield on the 4th and Koko in London on the 5th. Later that month, they’re set to perform on the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury Festival on the 26th and will support The Who at Hyde Park the same day. Following these dates, the band embarks on their Faces To Faces tour, their most extensive UK tour to date, running through September and October.
The “Tarantula Deadly Cargo” video exemplifies Sleaford Mods’ distinctive style and thematic focus. Fans can anticipate a continuation of the duo’s unfiltered portrayal of everyday life, delivered with their signature blend of wit and grit. As they prepare for the release of Key Markets, Sleaford Mods reaffirm their commitment to addressing the complexities of modern existence through their music.
