Today’s video of the day is Industry – “State Of The Nation” released in 1983.
Industry, an American new wave band, gained prominence in the early 1980s. Their sole studio album, Stranger to Stranger, features the notable track “State of the Nation.” This song achieved significant chart success, reaching No. 3 in Italy, No. 10 in Sweden, No. 78 in Australia, and No. 81 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The official music video for “State of the Nation” was filmed aboard the retired aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid. The shoot spanned two nights and cost $37,000. To create an intense atmosphere, the production team used blue and white lights, red emergency flares, and smoke effects. Both retired and active U.S. Navy personnel participated in the video. Additionally, students from Half Hollow Hills East High School acted as naval personnel, wearing their own uniforms during the shoot. The production company later donated $1,000 to the school.
In the video, the band performs on the ship at night, surrounded by uniformed naval personnel and a military band, all dancing to the music. Parked aircraft are visible in the background. Lead singer Jon Carin plays a synthesizer and computer setup, Rudy Perrone handles a Steinberger bass guitar, Brian Unger plays a Fender Stratocaster, and Mercury Caronia uses an acoustic drum kit with Simmons hexapads. An alternate version of the video, set in a different location, was later released. Stranger to Stranger remains Industry’s only studio album, with “State of the Nation” standing out as its most successful single. The song’s themes and the video’s striking visuals contributed to its international appeal.
