Today’s video of the day is the Mogwai feat. Iggy Pop – "Underground" released in 2026.
Scottish post-rock pioneers Mogwai join forces with punk icon Iggy Pop on “Underground.” Released September 30, 2026, the track leads Mogwai’s upcoming career retrospective Happy Tears. Rock Action Records will release the album on January 8, 2027. The song also marks a remarkable full-circle moment. In 1999, Mogwai sampled a 1977 Iggy Pop interview on “Punk Rock.” That track opened Come On Die Young, their second studio album. Now, nearly three decades later, Iggy contributes vocals to a brand-new Mogwai composition.
Moreover, Iggy Pop wrote the lyrics from the viewpoint of an unhappy robot. The character wants love instead of corporate success. As a result, the song takes aim at loneliness, greed, celebrity culture, and privilege. Meanwhile, Matt Sweeney arranged the sung vocal sections. Mogwai frontman Stuart Braithwaite has long admired Iggy and The Stooges. In his 2022 memoir Spaceships Over Glasgow, he called discovering The Stooges a life-changing moment. Iggy has also praised Mogwai for years. He even played “Take Me Somewhere Nice” on his BBC 6 Music radio show. Thus, “Underground” connects Mogwai’s early influences with their evolving post-rock sound.
Finally, “Underground” gives Happy Tears a strong link to Mogwai’s wider history. The retrospective follows a catalog that spans Mogwai Young Team, Come On Die Young, Rock Action, Happy Songs for Happy People, and later albums. It also reflects three decades of experimentation beyond conventional post-rock. The release arrives alongside Happy Tears: The Story of Mogwai, a feature-length oral history documentary hosted by BBC’s Matt Everitt. Together, the album and documentary celebrate Mogwai’s journey from Scottish outsiders to influential independent artists. The “Underground” video therefore captures a collaboration rooted in history, friendship, and mutual admiration.
