Today’s video of the day is U96 – "Club Bizarre" released in 1995.
Released in February 1995, “Club Bizarre” marked a bold moment for German electronic project U96. At that time, the group was led by producer Alex Christensen. Previously, U96 had gained fame with techno-driven hits like “Das Boot” and “Energie.” However, by the mid-90s, their sound began to evolve. As a result, “Club Bizarre” leaned darker and more hypnotic. The track became the title song of their third album, Club Bizarre. Moreover, it featured vocals by Skadi Lange. Importantly, the song sampled the melody from Alannah Myles’ “Song Instead of a Kiss,” giving it emotional depth. Consequently, the single topped the charts in Finland and reached the top 20 across Europe.
Musically, “Club Bizarre” represented a turning point in the U96 catalog. Earlier albums focused heavily on hard techno and rave energy. In contrast, Club Bizarre embraced trance textures and moody atmospheres. Therefore, it bridged their early underground roots with a more melodic direction. This shift also influenced later releases like Heaven, which pushed even further into pop-oriented dance music. Meanwhile, longtime fans appreciated the balance between club intensity and introspection. Because of this, “Club Bizarre” remains one of their most enduring tracks. Over time, it inspired remixes and covers by Brooklyn Bounce and Sunlike Brothers, extending its legacy.
Visually, the music video reinforced the song’s strange allure. Filmed in London and directed by Paul Morgans, it leaned heavily into surreal imagery. For example, Skadi Lange sings from an aerial cage suspended in space. Meanwhile, performance artists appear on stilts across a virtual beach. Additionally, early CGI effects dominate the visuals. Most memorably, Lange transforms into a green seahorse. As a result, the clip feels both futuristic and unsettling. Even today, it stands as a defining image of mid-90s Eurodance ambition.
