Today’s video of the day is Queen – "Breakthru" released in 1989.

“Breakthru” by Queen captures the band’s unstoppable energy both in sound and vision. Released in 1989, the single appears on their album The Miracle. The song blends Freddie Mercury’s dynamic vocals with the band’s signature rock power. It marked a creative resurgence after a break following A Kind of Magic in 1986. The Miracle reflected unity among the band members, each credited equally for songwriting. “Breakthru” symbolized their renewed strength and optimism during the late ’80s.

The music video for “Breakthru” is unforgettable. It features Queen performing on a speeding steam train named “The Miracle Express.” Filmed over two days in June 1989, it took place on the Nene Valley Railway near Peterborough, England. The locomotive, a Great Western Railway No. 3822, was repainted specially for the video. Roger Taylor came up with the concept of the moving train stage, adding an exhilarating sense of motion. Debbie Leng, Taylor’s girlfriend, appears in the opening sequence before joining the band’s wild performance.

During filming, the train reached speeds of up to 60 mph. The famous moment when it bursts through a wall under a bridge became iconic, though slightly imperfect due to air pressure collapsing the wall early. Despite the risks, the band insured themselves for £2 million. Queen enjoyed the outdoor shoot, calling it a refreshing change from studio life. “Breakthru” stands out in Queen’s catalog as a joyful mix of rock precision and cinematic fun. It perfectly captures the adventurous spirit of The Miracle era—proof that even after two decades, Queen could still surprise the world at full speed.
