Today’s video of the day is Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain” released in 1993.

Culture Beat released Mr. Vain in April 1993 as the lead single from their second album, Serenity. The song became a global hit, topping the charts in 19 countries. It defined the Eurodance sound of the early ’90s. Tania Evans provided the vocals, while Jay Supreme rapped. The lyrics describe a narcissistic character obsessed with power and control.

The German group formed in 1989, led by DJ Torsten Fenslau. Their early sound mixed house music with poetry, as heard in Der Erdbeermund. With Eurodance rising, they shifted styles. They recruited Evans and Supreme to bring a fresh energy to Serenity. The album followed the success of Horizon, expanding their club-driven sound. Matt Broadley directed the music video for Mr. Vain. It opens in black-and-white, showing Supreme staring into a mirror. His reflection cracks, hinting at his inner vanity. The scene shifts to a lavish house party. Dressed in baroque fashion, guests mix with futuristic ravers. Evans watches Supreme from a distance as he moves through the crowd. She leaves, and he follows.

The visuals grow surreal. A fruit display turns into a chaotic feast. Supreme chases Evans through dark hallways. She finally confronts him with a hand mirror. His reflection cracks again, revealing his true self. The video ends with an empty rocking horse, symbolizing lost control. Mr. Vain paved the way for Culture Beat’s next hits, Anything and World in Your Hands. These tracks, also from Serenity, carried the same Eurodance energy. The group’s style evolved in later albums like Inside Out, adapting to changing dance trends. However, Mr. Vain remains their defining track, securing their place in dance music history.
