Today’s video of the day is Skinny Puppy – “Choralone” released in 1989.

Skinny Puppy released Rabies on November 21, 1989, through Nettwerk. This was their fifth studio album and featured Ministry’s Al Jourgensen on guitar and vocals. The album mixed Skinny Puppy’s industrial roots with a heavier, guitar-driven sound. While it gained commercial success, some critics felt it leaned too much toward Ministry’s style. “Choralone” stands out as a haunting, atmospheric track on Rabies. Unlike the album’s aggressive songs, it embraces eerie synths and distorted vocals. The song later became an essential part of Skinny Puppy’s live performances. During the 1990 Too Dark Park tour, a backing video played during “Choralone,” enhancing its unsettling atmosphere. This video featured surreal and disturbing imagery, reinforcing the band’s reputation for intense live shows.

The Rabies album had a complicated production. Jourgensen’s involvement caused tension within the band, particularly with cEvin Key and Dwayne Goettel. Despite this, the album still featured Skinny Puppy’s signature sound on tracks like “Worlock” and “Choralone.” The album also experimented with political themes, as seen in “Hexonxonx,” which criticized the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Skinny Puppy’s previous albums focused more on electronic experimentation. Rabies introduced more guitars, making it a divisive release among fans. However, the band quickly returned to their darker, electronic roots with Too Dark Park in 1990. This shift reaffirmed their signature sound and influenced the industrial music scene.
