Today’s video of the day is Ministry – “Stigmata” released in 1990.
Ministry‘s song Stigmata appears on the live album In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up (Live), released in 1990. The album showcases Ministry’s intense industrial sound, and this version of Stigmata captures the raw energy of their live performances. The album includes six tracks, but the video version has three extra songs and different cover art. In 2017, the album was re-released as Live Necronomicon, featuring an expanded tracklist. Ministry was founded by Al Jourgensen in 1981. The band initially played synth-pop with a disco influence. Their early sound is evident on their first release, a 12” single on Wax Trax! Records. In 1983, Ministry’s debut album, With Sympathy, came out on Arista Records. However, Jourgensen was dissatisfied with the label’s control over the project. He soon parted ways with Arista.
After the fallout, Ministry returned to Wax Trax! and shifted to a harder, industrial sound. Their single Everyday (Is Halloween) became a hit in the underground club scene. This song marked their transition from synth-pop to the industrial style for which they’re known. Stigmata is part of this industrial era. The song first appeared on the 1988 studio album The Land of Rape and Honey. The live version on In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up amplifies its aggressive energy. It features heavy guitars, pounding drums, and distorted vocals, key elements of Ministry’s evolving sound.
The album sits between The Land of Rape and Honey and The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste. These albums solidified Ministry’s shift to a heavier, darker industrial style. Stigmata plays a central role in defining Ministry’s sound during this time. It also became one of their most iconic tracks. Overall, this live version of Stigmata shows Ministry at their peak, blending heavy industrial noise with fierce energy. Fans of the band’s later, heavier work often trace its roots back to songs like this.
