Today’s video of the day is Foetus – “Wash It All Off” released in 1981.

Foetus, the brainchild of J.G. Thirlwell, emerged onto the music scene in 1981 with the release of the debut single “Spite Your Face / OKFM 7” under his own label Self Immolation. This marked the inception of a solo project that would morph into various aliases, each pushing the boundaries of avant-garde sound. The track “Wash It All Off” hails from the early days of Foetus, nestled within the debut and sophomore albums “Deaf” and “Ache,” released in 1981-82. It encapsulates the raw energy and experimental ethos that characterized Foetus’ formative years.

As Thirlwell’s journey unfolded, so did the evolution of Foetus. From the gritty industrial landscapes of “Hole” (1984) to the frenetic frenzy of “Nail” (1985), each album showcased Thirlwell’s penchant for sonic exploration. Foetus ventured into live performances, enlisting the support of musicians from esteemed acts like Swans, Prong, and Pig. This collaboration breathed new life into the project, culminating in the formation of Foetus Corruptus and the electrifying live album “Rife” (1988). The ’90s saw Foetus soar to new heights with the release of “Gash” (1995), a critically acclaimed masterpiece featuring a lineup of talented musicians. This marked a departure from Thirlwell’s solo endeavors, signaling a shift towards collaborative expression.

Following a brief hiatus, Foetus returned with “Flow” (2001), a solo effort that showcased Thirlwell’s virtuosity across all instruments. This album, accompanied by the remix counterpart “Blow,” underscored Foetus’ adaptability and innovation. Throughout the discography, thematic elements emerged, from the monosyllabic album titles to the gradual introduction of color in cover artwork. Foetus’ sonic landscape evolved alongside its visual identity, culminating in a renewed focus on black-white-red aesthetics in 2004. “Wash It All Off” stands as a testament to Foetus’ pioneering spirit and enduring legacy in the realm of experimental music. With its pulsating rhythms and haunting melodies, this track invites listeners on a journey through the avant-garde realms of sound. Intriguing and enigmatic, Foetus continues to defy conventions and push boundaries, cementing its status as a trailblazer in the ever-evolving landscape of music.
