Today’s video of the day is Virgin Prunes – "Decline and Fall" released in 2025.
Virgin Prunes pushed Irish post-punk into strange new territory. They formed in Dublin in the late 1970s. Notably, they came from the same creative scene as U2. However, Virgin Prunes chose performance art, ritual, and shock over stadium rock. As a result, they built a cult reputation fast. Their style mixed gothic drama with experimental noise. Therefore, they stood apart from nearly every band of their era.
“Decline and Fall” appears on their landmark album …If I Die, I Die (1982). Colin Newman of Wire produced the record, which gave it a sharp edge. Additionally, the band divided the original vinyl into two themed halves. “Decline and Fall” sits on the “brown side,” tied to earth, myth, and decay. Meanwhile, the “blue side” explored madness and social collapse. The song sounds frantic and theatrical. Yet it also feels controlled and precise. The lyrics repeat grim images of children playing and death closing in.
The “Decline and Fall” video matches the band’s unsettling aesthetic. It feels like a stage performance captured on film. Furthermore, it connects directly to Virgin Prunes’ wider catalog. Earlier releases like If I Die, I Die Mini-Album hinted at their chaos. However, …If I Die, I Die refined it into something more powerful. Later albums like The Moon Looked Down and Laughed leaned further into atmosphere. Even so, “Decline and Fall” remains a key moment. It captures their peak balance of noise, theater, and post-punk dread.
