Today’s video of the day is The Shamen – "Hyperreal" released in 1991.

British electronic pioneers The Shamen pushed dance music toward the mainstream in the early 1990s. Their 1991 single Hyperreal captures that shift perfectly. The track appears on the influential album En-Tact. Moreover, it blends house beats with bright techno-pop melodies. The song features a vocal duet between Colin Angus and American singer Plavka Lonich. As a result, the track feels both hypnotic and melodic. Meanwhile, the title is sung in four distinct syllables: hy-per-ri-al. The single climbed to No. 29 on the UK Singles Chart. In addition, it reached No. 1 on the UK Indie Chart.

However, “Hyperreal” also became famous through its remixes. Most notably, producer William Orbit created the best-known version. His mix added shimmering synth textures and a futuristic atmosphere. Consequently, the track crossed from underground clubs to mainstream dance floors. Meanwhile, another remix came from Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto. That “Hyperreal Selector” version used pounding breakbeats and darker energy. Together, these mixes expanded the song’s reach. Therefore, “Hyperreal” helped define the sound of early 1990s UK rave culture.

The futuristic visuals of the 1991 clip match the song’s psychedelic energy. Bright colors, abstract imagery, and space-age scenes reflect the band’s electronic vision. Recently, a restored HD version brought new clarity to the original footage. Meanwhile, the song also marks an important moment in the band’s evolution. Earlier albums leaned toward indie rock and psychedelic influences. In contrast, En-Tact embraced acid house and rave culture. Because of that shift, the record paved the way for their global hit “Ebeneezer Goode.” Therefore, “Hyperreal” stands as a key bridge between the band’s early experimentation and their later chart success.
