Today’s video of the day is Depeche Mode – "People Are Good" released in 2024.
Formed in 1980 in Basildon, England, Depeche Mode helped shape modern electronic music. The band originally included Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andrew Fletcher, and Vince Clarke. Soon after, Gore became the primary songwriter. As a result, the group built a dark yet melodic synth-pop style. Albums like Black Celebration and Music for the Masses defined the 1980s alternative scene. Meanwhile, later records expanded their sound with deeper themes. Today, Depeche Mode remain one of the most influential electronic bands in the world.
“People Are Good” appears on their fifteenth studio album, Memento Mori, released in 2023. However, the single arrived later on April 5, 2024. Martin Gore wrote the track, while Dave Gahan delivers the reflective vocal. Musically, the song nods to classic electronic pioneers like Kraftwerk. Therefore, the track echoes the darker mood of the band’s mid-1980s work. At the same time, the lyrics revisit ideas from their 1984 hit “People Are People.” Yet this time, the message feels more skeptical. Gahan sings about convincing himself that people are good despite clear doubts.
Director Rich Hall created the striking black-and-white video with creative direction from longtime collaborator Anton Corbijn. First, viewers see scenes that look violent or troubling. However, each moment soon reveals a different truth. For example, a struggle becomes a rescue attempt. Likewise, tense scenes turn into acts of compassion or celebration. As a result, the video challenges quick judgments and media assumptions. Ultimately, the visuals reflect the song’s central idea. People often appear cruel at first glance. Nevertheless, deeper context may reveal something human and hopeful.
