Today’s video of the day is Ministry – “N.W.O.” released in 1992.
Ministry released “N.W.O.” in 1992 as the second single from Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs. The song became a defining track in industrial metal, blending heavy guitars with aggressive electronic beats. Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker co-wrote and co-produced it, using samples of President George H. W. Bush’s speeches. The track served as a protest anthem, criticizing political corruption and military aggression.
The song was a major success. It peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 1993. It also appeared in the Cool World soundtrack and was later featured in video games like Need for Speed: The Run and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. In 2015, VH1 ranked it No. 10 on their “Top 10 Hardest Hitting Heavy Metal Political Anthems” list. The music video, directed by Peter Christopherson, features intense imagery. It mixes scenes of riots, police brutality, and urban chaos. One striking moment shows a woman dressed as the Statue of Liberty being beaten, resembling the infamous Rodney King footage. Clips from classic films, including Space Amoeba and the Gamera franchise, also appear. The video gained further recognition when it aired on Beavis and Butt-Head, along with Ministry’s track “Just One Fix.”
Psalm 69 marked a turning point for Ministry. The album, with its mix of industrial and thrash metal, became their most commercially successful release. Songs like “Just One Fix” and “Jesus Built My Hotrod” reinforced the band’s aggressive style. Following this album, Ministry continued exploring political themes in Filth Pig (1996) and Rio Grande Blood (2006). However, Psalm 69 remains a fan favorite and a key influence on industrial metal. With its relentless energy and sharp political message, “N.W.O.” still resonates today. Its music video, packed with chaotic imagery, amplifies its powerful message.
