Today’s video of the day is La Bouche – “Be My Lover” released in 1995.

“Be My Lover,” a chart-topping hit by the German Eurodance sensation La Bouche, emerged as a defining track in their musical journey. Released in March 1995 as the second single from their debut album, “Sweet Dreams” (1995), this infectious tune quickly became their most successful song alongside “Sweet Dreams.” La Bouche, comprised of American rapper Lane McCray and singer Melanie Thornton, found their musical synergy in Saarbrücken, Germany. Their paths crossed when McCray, stationed in the US Air Force, met Thornton, who had relocated from the US to pursue a career as a guest vocalist in the German dance-pop scene.

Under the guidance of renowned record producer Frank Farian, the creative force behind Milli Vanilli and Boney M, La Bouche was born. Despite facing the challenge of McCray’s military duties, the duo embarked on a musical journey that would make them one of the mid-90s’ most beloved Eurodance acts. “Be My Lover,” co-written by Thornton and McCray, showcased their songwriting prowess. The iconic “la da da dee” part, initially deemed challenging to find words for, became an integral and memorable element of the song. The track’s success surpassed expectations, securing La Bouche a worldwide hit.

The song’s dominance in Europe, reaching number one in various countries, and its significant presence on charts like the Eurochart Hot 100, solidified La Bouche’s status in the Eurodance scene. In the US, “Be My Lover” reached impressive positions on the Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box Top 100, attaining the top spot on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for two weeks in December 1995. The accolades for “Be My Lover” extended beyond chart success. La Bouche received the 1996 Echo award in Germany for Best Dance Single and the ASCAP award in the US for the ‘Most Played Song in America.’ Notably, in 2000, when Thornton ventured into a solo career, La Bouche released a new version of “Be My Lover” featuring vocals by Natascha Wright.

In the dynamic landscape of Eurodance, “Be My Lover” remains an enduring anthem that defines La Bouche’s legacy. Its infectious beats and catchy lyrics continue to resonate, encapsulating the duo’s meteoric rise in the music industry during the mid-90s.
