Today’s video of the day is OMD – “History of Modern (part I)” released in 2010.
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, formed in 1978, emerged as a pioneering force in English electronic music. With Andy McCluskey on vocals and bass guitar and Paul Humphreys on synthesizers, they embarked on a journey that shaped the landscape of modern music. Their debut gig at Eric’s in Liverpool marked the beginning of a remarkable career trajectory. Transitioning from earlier incarnations like ‘VCL XI’ and ‘Hitlerz Underpantz’, they found their stride with chart-topping hits under the Virgin-owned label DinDisc, notably the 1980 release, “Messages”. The addition of drummer Malcolm Holmes and synth player Dave Hughes solidified their lineup, with Martin Cooper replacing Hughes in 1980. Despite Humphreys’ departure in 1989, McCluskey retained the band name and spearheaded a resurgence in 1991 with hits like “Sailing On The Seven Seas” and the album “Sugar Tax”.
After a period of McCluskey’s solo endeavors, a reunion was announced on New Year’s Day in 2007, leading to a triumphant return of the classic lineup. Their live album “OMD Live: Architecture & Morality & More” in 2008 reaffirmed their enduring influence. In 2023, OMD reached new heights with the release of “Bauhaus Staircase”, their highest-charting album to date, debuting at No. 2 on the UK Charts. This remarkable journey sets the stage for their latest offering, “History of Modern (part I)”, a testament to their evolution and enduring relevance in the ever-changing landscape of electronic music.
