Today’s video of the day is Bauhaus – "Lagartija Nick" released in 1983.

A striking moment in gothic rock history arrives with the “Lagartija Nick” video by Bauhaus. The single appeared in January 1983 on Beggars Banquet Records. However, the song started earlier. The band first recorded it in 1979 under the title “Bite My Hip.” At first, the group rejected the track because the lyrics felt too simple. Later, their label pushed for another single after the success of their cover of Ziggy Stardust. Therefore, singer Peter Murphy and bassist David J rewrote the lyrics with a darker tone.

Meanwhile, the reworked track became far more sinister. The title references a devilish figure from Spanish folklore. In fact, “Lagartija” means lizard in Spanish. Furthermore, the lyrics include nods to Leopold von Sacher‑Masoch, whose name inspired the word “masochism.” As a result, lines like “He feels like Sacher-Masoch” deepen the song’s provocative edge. Musically, the track pulses with tension. Sharp guitar lines from Daniel Ash cut through the rhythm. At the same time, bassist David J drives the groove. In addition, drummer Kevin Haskins delivers slicing percussion that keeps the song urgent and danceable.

“Lagartija Nick” later appeared on Bauhaus’ fourth album, Burning from the Inside. However, the album arrived during a turbulent period for the band. Murphy briefly left the group during recording. Consequently, the remaining members completed much of the material. Even so, the record still fits the band’s dark evolution. Earlier albums like In the Flat Field and Mask defined gothic post-punk with stark intensity. By contrast, Burning from the Inside explores broader styles. Therefore, “Lagartija Nick” stands as a bridge between Bauhaus’ raw beginnings and their more experimental final chapter.
