Today’s video of the day is Corona – "The Rhythm of the Night" released in 1993.
The video for “The Rhythm of the Night” by Corona brings the energy of early Eurodance to life. Released in 1993, this debut single helped define the genre. The track later appeared on Corona’s 1995 debut album, The Rhythm of the Night. The album includes other hits like “Baby Baby” and “Try Me Out,” but this title track remains their most iconic song. Italian producer Francesco Bontempi created the project Corona. The vocals on the song were recorded by Giovanna Bersola, also known as Jenny B. However, due to stage fright, Bersola chose to stay behind the scenes. Brazilian performer Olga Souza fronted the group in public appearances and in the music video. This video shows Souza dancing in a carnival-style amusement park. Bright lights, rides, and carefree moves match the beat perfectly.
The single became a huge hit across Europe in 1994. It reached number one in Italy and landed in the top five in several countries. In the United States, it peaked at number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has since appeared on best dance tracks lists by both Rolling Stone and Billboard. Interestingly, the melody and some lyrics draw from “Save Me” by Say When!, a track from 1987. Because of this, songwriters Pete Glenister and Mike Gaffey received co-writing credits.
Corona’s The Rhythm of the Night album continued the group’s success in the mid-1990s. Its follow-up albums Walking on Music (1998) and And Me U (2001) never matched the debut’s impact. Still, Corona’s first album remains a landmark of Eurodance. The genre itself took shape in the late 1980s, blending house, techno, and pop. Acts like Snap! and Technotronic helped lay the foundation. Corona’s debut fit perfectly into that wave. The music video played a big role in the song’s rise. Stations like Germany’s VIVA gave it heavy rotation. The visuals helped cement the track as a dance anthem for the decade.
