Today’s video of the day is Gary Numan & The Skaparis Orchestra – “Broken” released in 2019.

Gary Numan performed Broken live with The Skaparis Orchestra at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. This version of the song is part of the 2019 album When the Sky Came Down. The live album captures the energy of Numan’s orchestral tour, blending electronic and orchestral sounds. Gary Numan began his music career in 1977 as a punk rocker in the band Mean Street. After being sacked, he joined The Lasers with Paul Gardiner. Soon after, Numan and Gardiner left to form Tubeway Army. Numan’s uncle, Jess Lidyard, joined as the drummer. In 1978, Tubeway Army signed with Beggars Banquet and released punk singles. During recording sessions, Numan discovered the Minimoog synthesizer, which shaped his future sound.

By the time Broken was recorded, Numan had evolved far beyond his early punk days. When the Sky Came Down shows Numan revisiting his darker, electronic roots, but now with an orchestral twist. This album complements his previous release, Savage (Songs from a Broken World). Both albums share a dystopian theme, though Broken and other live tracks take on a new, grander life with the orchestra.

The inclusion of The Skaparis Orchestra adds depth to Broken, making it one of the standout tracks on When the Sky Came Down. The album connects to Numan’s exploration of dark themes and electronic sounds. His collaboration with the orchestra brings a fresh layer to his already expansive sound. In conclusion, Broken and its orchestral version display Numan’s ability to reinvent himself. The live album builds on his earlier work and shows his dedication to pushing musical boundaries.
