Today’s video of the day is Renegade Soundwave – “Space Gladiator (Satellite of Dub)” released in 1989.

Renegade Soundwave, a pioneering and influential electronic music group, formed in London during the late ’80s. They were early adopters of sampling, computer technology, and DJ skills, pushing the boundaries of sub-bass exploration. The trio, consisting of Gary Asquith, Danny Briottet, and Carl Bonnie, debuted with the 1987 single “Kray Twins” on Rhythm King. A year later, they moved to Mute Records and released the EP Biting My Nails. Their unique sound combined the punk and industrial ethic with dub and dancefloor electronica. Renegade Soundwave was in good company with fellow sound innovators like Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy, and Meat Beat Manifesto. Despite taking two years to record material for an album, they released Soundclash and In Dub within six months, earning critical acclaim.

RSW In Dub, a seminal album, connected the dots in the emerging electronic, rave, dub, and indie scenes of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Renegade Soundwave influenced major artists like The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers. They also impacted the Drum & Bass, Techno, Breakbeat, and Trip Hop movements. “Probably a Robbery” from Soundclash reached the British Top 40 in early 1990. However, their track “The Phantom” remains an enduring anthem from the rave era.

Their songs “The Phantom,” “Women Respond to Bass,” “Ozone Breakdown,” “Probably a Robbery,” “Biting My Nails,” and “Renegade Soundwave” were top five US Billboard Dance singles. In 1990, Carl Bonnie left to pursue a solo career. Asquith and Briottet then spent several years in isolation. They re-emerged in 1994 with the single “Renegade Soundwave” and the album How You Doin?. During late 1994, they played their first live date since the 1991 “Mute Over America” tour. They released Brixton and The Next Chapter of Dub the following year. The compilation RSW 87-95 emerged in 1996.

“Space Gladiator (Satellite of Dub)” is a standout track from RSW In Dub. This fan-made rework video showcases Renegade Soundwave’s innovative use of sampling and deep bass. Their sound remains fresh, relevant, and continues to inspire new generations. This fan-made video reaffirms their role as electronic music pioneers.
