Today’s video of the day is Lush – "De-Luxe" released in 1990.
“De-Luxe” by Lush arrived in 1990 as the opening track of their debut EP Mad Love. The song, paired with its dreamy video, captures the early shoegaze energy that defined the band’s sound. Lush formed in London in 1987. Founding members Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson crafted lush guitar textures mixed with ethereal vocals. With Chris Acland on drums and Steve Rippon on bass, the band quickly became part of the rising shoegaze and dream pop scene.
Mad Love was released on 26 February 1990 through 4AD. Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie produced the EP, giving the songs shimmering layers of sound. “De-Luxe” stood out with its mix of jangle pop, post-punk, and shoegaze elements. The track even charted on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks and topped the UK Independent Singles Chart.
Compared to their 1989 mini-album Scar, the Mad Love EP sounded more polished and expansive. “De-Luxe” showed how Lush could balance noise with melody, making it a milestone in their catalog. Later albums like Spooky (1992) and Split (1994) expanded on this formula, while Lovelife (1996) leaned toward Britpop. In this way, “De-Luxe” links the raw beginnings of Scar with the more refined direction that followed. The video for “De-Luxe” highlights Lush’s swirling soundscape with visuals that match the dreamlike atmosphere. It remains a strong introduction to their early work and a cornerstone of their shoegaze legacy.
