Today’s video of the day is Pere Ubu – "Final Solution" released in 1976.
“Final Solution” by Pere Ubu is a furious, brooding blast of avant-garage energy. Released in 1976 as a single, it later appeared on Pere Ubu 1975-1977, a compilation from Geffen Records. The new video features live band footage, classic horror and sci-fi clips, and original visuals by David Ensminger. Pere Ubu formed in Cleveland in 1975. Vocalist David Thomas created the band to record leftover songs from his previous group, Rocket from the Tombs. Guitarist Peter Laughner and bassist Tim Wright joined him, along with Dave Taylor on keys and Scott Krauss on drums. At first, Pere Ubu was not meant to be a long-term project. Yet, they evolved into one of the most influential underground rock bands of their era.
“Final Solution” captures Pere Ubu’s early raw sound. It mixes punk urgency with warped synthesizers and surreal lyrics. The song explores alienation and frustration, with Thomas shouting, wailing, and whispering his way through mental chaos. The guitars snarl. The synths churn like a nightmare. The lyrics feel both desperate and strangely humorous. Though not on a studio album, the song acts as a precursor to The Modern Dance (1978), their debut LP. That album built on the jagged energy of “Final Solution” while adding more structure and experimentation. Their follow-up, Dub Housing (1978), pushed their sound into even stranger territory, marked by fractured rhythms and dissonant textures.
Thomas often rejects the idea that Pere Ubu is “art rock,” claiming they simply play modern rock music. Still, their early singles, like “Final Solution,” shaped the post-punk landscape. Bands like Joy Division and Sonic Youth drew inspiration from Pere Ubu’s fearless innovation. The video brings this iconic song to life through jittery visuals and layered editing. Horror and sci-fi scenes amplify the song’s dread and alienation. Ensminger’s editing creates a visual overload that matches the band’s sonic intensity. “Final Solution” remains the perfect gateway into Pere Ubu’s world—strange, noisy, and unforgettable. It’s rock music torn apart and rebuilt. And over 40 years later, it still sounds like nothing else.
