Today’s video of the day is The Ramones – “Time Has Come Today” released in 1983.

The Ramones, punk pioneers born out of New York’s gritty underground, brought a raw, rebellious sound to the world. Formed in the early ‘70s, they embraced fast-paced, punchy songs paired with leather jackets and ripped jeans. Emerging from CBGB’s, the band helped define punk, alongside acts like Talking Heads, Blondie, and Television. Their hit tracks, “I Wanna Be Sedated” and “Blitzkrieg Bop,” became anthems of rebellion. Signed by Sire Records’ Seymour Stein, they made punk accessible, yet still unapologetic.

By 1983, with their seventh album, Subterranean Jungle, the Ramones faced pressure to evolve. After experimenting with pop influences on End of the Century and Pleasant Dreams, the band leaned back into their roots for Subterranean Jungle. The album featured three notable cover songs, which added an interesting twist to their usual style. Among these was “Time Has Come Today,” a track that originally belonged to the Chambers Brothers. The Ramones’ take injected the song with a punk edge, aligning it perfectly with their no-nonsense attitude.

“Time Has Come Today” was just one of the album’s three covers. Another standout, “Little Bit O’ Soul,” opens the album with a playful yet edgy vibe. The third cover, “I Need Your Love,” originally by the Boyfriends, connects to the New York punk scene that birthed the Ramones. These covers allowed the Ramones to blend new influences with their signature sound.

While Subterranean Jungle didn’t bring the commercial success they had hoped for, it rekindled their punk energy. Songs like “Time Has Come Today” reinforced their rebellious stance. This album acted as a bridge, connecting their pop-influenced experiments with the raw energy that defined them. The Ramones, through this album, reminded fans of the grit that made them icons.
