Today’s video of the day is Silverfish – "Big Bad Baby Pig Squeal" released in 1992.
Silverfish exploded out of Camden in 1988 with a raw, unfiltered sound. Fronted by Scottish-born Lesley Rankine, the band carved out a space in the indie punk metal scene with fearless energy. Rankine’s fierce vocals and feminist edge became defining traits. Guitarist Andrew “Fuzz” Duprey, bassist Chris P Mowforth, and drummer Stuart Watson completed the lineup. Together, they helped shape the so-called “Camden Lurch” scene, a grittier alternative to shoegaze and dance-driven acts of the time. Their early EPs were later compiled into Cockeye in 1990, setting the stage for their first full-length release.
By 1991, Silverfish released Fat Axl, a loud and uncompromising debut that landed them a tour with Pigface. The record showcased their abrasive energy and unpolished honesty. However, it was their second album, Organ Fan, in 1992 that brought them wider attention. The standout single “Big Bad Baby Pig Squeal” came with unforgettable lyrics: “Hips, Tits, Lips, Power.” The phrase became iconic, emblazoned on a T-shirt that symbolized the band’s mix of raw power and feminist defiance. During this era, Silverfish also toured with 7 Year Bitch and gained praise from BBC DJ John Peel, who noted their potential stardom if they had hailed from New York.
The video for “Big Bad Baby Pig Squeal” captures the chaos and spirit of Organ Fan. Compared to Fat Axl, this record displayed a sharper production while keeping the band’s intensity intact. The song’s aggressive riffs and biting vocals highlight Silverfish’s refusal to soften their message for broader appeal. This second album stands as their high point, bridging the rawness of their debut with a more refined but equally confrontational sound. Sadly, the band disbanded in 1993, leaving behind a short but explosive legacy. Yet, “Big Bad Baby Pig Squeal” remains their most recognizable moment, immortalizing Silverfish as one of Camden’s fiercest exports.
