Today’s video of the day is Suicidal Tendencies – "Waking the Dead" released in 1989.
Suicidal Tendencies rose from the Venice, California skate-punk scene in the early 1980s. Founded by vocalist Mike Muir in 1981, the band quickly gained a reputation for blending hardcore punk with thrash metal. Their self-titled debut in 1983 brought underground recognition, especially with the hit “Institutionalized.” By the late 1980s, Suicidal Tendencies had evolved into pioneers of crossover thrash, pushing their aggressive sound into new territory.
“Waking the Dead” appeared on their 1989 album Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit…Déjà Vu. The record was a mix of new tracks, re-recordings, and material from Muir’s side projects. While not a traditional studio album, it cemented the band’s relentless energy and creativity. The video for “Waking the Dead” captured their raw stage presence, blending skate culture visuals with fast, aggressive performance. It showed their growing popularity as they moved deeper into thrash metal while keeping punk roots alive.
This track connected the dots between Join the Army (1987) and the breakthrough Lights…Camera…Revolution! (1990). While Join the Army still leaned heavily on punk elements, Waking the Dead signaled their heavier thrash direction. That sound became central on Lights…Camera…Revolution!, which gave the band mainstream recognition. “Waking the Dead” stands as an important step in that evolution, bridging two distinct phases of Suicidal Tendencies’ career while showcasing the energy that defined their rise in heavy music.
